Modern Monday quilt blocks

Hello all, happy Friday to you!  I had planned on having these blocks done earlier this week so I could show you all on Work In Progress Wednesday, but today will have to do!  My modern quilt guild meeting is next Thursday, so I will have to have blocks 9 to 16 done for then.  You can check out the originals here.

Now, back to the quilting!  I've made four blocks so far...and they are in no particular order.

This is block 15, a double 4-patch, and I seemed to have trouble making this one wonky...I mean, I tried to make it wonky, but it came out looking like this.  Maybe I've just discovered the secret to accurate quilting for me...try to make it wonky and it will come out pretty darn straight..lol!

This is block 10, the snowball block.  I didn't make it as fancy as in the original pattern, just a straight up snowball.  The red ornament fabric is a new addition to the quilt...it's so cheery!



Block 9 is a simple string block, a nice way to use up the little bits of fabric. It's too bad my photos are so...hmmm, how shall I put this...sucky??  Yup, that's about right.  Not sure why these photos came out looking so yellow!

I totally chickened out for Block 12 and did the easier variation...take a look at the original Winged Prayer and you'll see why!

This is another gem, and another great way to use up your scraps!

My last giveaway is an adorable little quilt kit called Gramma's Favorite.  The fabric colours are blue and white and you get everything to complete a 16" x 21" quilt, that includes backing, and binding!

Diamond in the rough

Looks like I'm late to the party with my WIP Wednesday post, so this will be short and sweet.  I put together a few more blocks on my 'diamond in the rough' quilt last weekend.  This is such a great stashbusting quilt...love it!

 

The pattern for this quilt can be found in this book String Quilt Revival. They have lots of fun projects - the spider web quilt has been on my to-do list for quite some time now. I'm linking up to The Needle and Thread Network and Freshly Pieced.

 
PS - 2 more classes and I'm done school for the semester...yipee!!!  I'll be celebrating with a giveaway... :-)

Quilt retreat at the Lazy M Lodge

I'm counting down the days now, school will soon be over and I'm looking forward to spending more time in the sewing room...yoohoo!  In the meantime, I was lucky enough to attend a quilt retreat a week ago with my quilt guild, the M & M's.  Here are a few photos of the projects that were in the works.

A gorgeous Bali Wedding Star by Judy Niemeyer.  Can't wait to see this project come together!

An original in the works by our fearless leader, Linda.  Will take better photos next time we have our guild meeting. 

And this is what I worked on...I kid you not.  Two full days and I completed all the rings for my daughter's double wedding ring quilt.  Now I can move on to making the melons and corners and the process of putting the rings together begins...eek, I'm pretty nervous about this whole thing now!

We had a fire in our quilting area (and there's another project over the couch...a little baby quilt with a little chick on it..so cute!)

Settling in on Friday.  We quilted in the guest house and stayed in the main lodge.  They have a beautiful Collie named Rusty who was happy to escort us to and from the buildings every day, as long as we gave him a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ear.

Modern quilt blocks

As promised, here is the next installment in the Modern Monday quilt project....

My fave, for this batch...

Confession time: I totally goofed when making this block, I made the turquoise blocks too small because they are supposed to form the pinwheel pattern (see the instructions here), but I really like the results...it's kinda fun, :-)

I am really lovin' that green fabric...but I only have one fat quarter and it's almost all gone!

Churn dash, wonky style.

So here are 7 of my first 8 blocks.  I'm not making the skull block, so I'll have to wing it for block number 8.

Downton Abbey withdrawal

Hello everyone!

It's Sunday evening and I'm missing Downton Abbey...how much longer until the Season 4? lol  I've not done much sewing this week, I'm heading into my last few weeks of the semester at school and it's been rather hectic, but isn't that true no matter what we are doing?  I've been reading textbooks for the past few months, so I try to listen to a book on tape while driving to the university and look what I found at my local library...

...the real story of Downton Abbey!!  I have to say, it's pretty fascinating too.  I finished reading the book on the left a few weeks ago (well, it was reading week after all), and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

I do have a few quilt blocks made for my modern quilt guild meeting this Thursday...but I'll put that in my WIP post this Wednesday.
