Skulls and chains

Hello everyone!  I started working with my wild fabric the other day, just playing right now, not following any pattern. Just making blocks and seeing what fabric combinations I like.  I'm thinking these blocks are a little too severe...I need to take a look at my Freddy and Gwen books again for inspiration and see what strikes my fancy.

I'm not sure if I want to use the skull and crossbone fabric in the blocks themselves or if I want to use it as sashing and/or for the border.  I do like that purple flame fabric though!



I originally thought of using different shapes in this quilt, large 12 inch squares, smaller 6 inch blocks and rectangles like this one.

 

I like the fabrics, but like I said, too severe overall...definitely need to incorporate some liberated quilting techniques here!



Down to the last block

Hello everyone!  I took my Cool Blues quilt out of my "to finish" pile last week and have been working on it, slowly but surely, this past week.  Each block has 16 flying geese blocks and at 16 blocks, that makes 256 flying geese for the whole quilt.  Not a record to be sure, but enough to make me not want to make any more flying geese for a little while!

I have one block yet to put together and then I can begin the process of putting everything together....oh happy day!

Here's the best shot I can get at the moment of the quilt.  Once everything is sewed together, I still have a border to add, but that won't take too long to do.

Oh yes, I did it, I actually bought this fabric.

Hello everyone!  While at my local quilt store last week, I saw the cheesiest fabric I've ever laid eyes on...and I couldn't stop laughing when I did.  Naturally, I had to return and pick some up! 



Here it is, the cowboy special.  The look on my daughter's face when she saw the fabric in my sewing room was priceless!



For you Twilight fans....doesn't this guy remind you a little of Taylor Lautner...aka Jacob?  My daughter thinks so, although that might just be the whole shirtless thing! lol

Something different for me

Hi everyone!  I'm still puttering around, not spending nearly enough time in my sewing room as I would like, but that's life.  I pulled out my Cool Blues quilt again and have made some progress.  I'm determined to just get this one finished and then send it off to be long-armed...no way I'm going to attempt to quilt this baby.

Stopped in to see what was new at one of my local quilt stores earlier this week and came home with some fabrics that are truly out of my comfort zone.  I do have a project in mind for these fabrics, but you'll just have to wait and see.

Mmmh, definitely not my usual sort of fabric.  Oh well, sometimes you just have to go with your gut instinct, right?



A day of puttering

Hello everyone!  I had grand plans to spend the whole day in my sewing room yesterday, but it turned into one of those meandering days, where I flitted from project to project, not really focusing on any one thing.  That's ok by me, we all need those days once in a while, don't we?  I did a little more unpacking, some sorting of boxes, made a few red and white blocks, listened to a book on CD, did some reading, a little baking and tried to brush the dog...who was having none of it...took out a new puzzle and rescued my plants from the basement.  I have a feeling today will be spent in much the same way.

The book I'm currently listening too while I quilt.  It's quite a good story about George Mallory and his quest to be the first person to reach the summit of Everest, based on a true story.

 

The book I'm reading, 'Left neglected' is the latest by Lisa Genova, author of 'Still Alice.'  The subject matter is interesting and unusual, but I'm not drawn in by the main character or her struggles in this novel as I was for 'Still Alice.'  However, I'm only at the halfway mark, so I'll let you know what I think when I'm done.



Saturday in the sewing room

Hello everyone!  I am supposed to be in Red Deer, admiring all the beautiful quilts at their quilt show, but mother nature put a halt to those plans with our very first spring snowstorm....today only of course.  Temperatures are supposed to get back to normal tomorrow and I imagine most of the snow will be gone by Monday or Tuesday.

A Different Scrap Bee Block

Hi everyone!  While dreaming up what sort of block I would make for the scrap-bee, I came up with this:

I put a few of these blocks together to see how I liked them.  They were ok, and I'll probably end up making more and making a quilt top eventually, but they just didn't work for me right now for some reason...

See what I mean?  They're ok and I'm sure they will look good once I make more and put them together, but there's just something missing I think.
